Dr. Fatimah Fanuise
Uncovering the Development of Islam in America
Dr. Fatimah Fanusie’s research into the 20th century development of Islam in America chronicles the explicit and covert activities of a little known, non-orthodox group of Indian Muslims, the Ahmadiyya, operating in Europe and North America. Her scholarship on this history enriches the understanding of the contemporary American Islamic scene and of America’s religious evolution.
As a historian, Dr. Fanusie brings a scholarly perspective to private sector and public sector projects with which she is involved. She is currently the director of the Civic Leaders Fellowship program at the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies in the Baltimore, Maryland area.
Dr. Fanusie's scholarship combines three areas of inquiry:
1) How did Islam spread around the globe historically, especially as a minority religion using syncretism that competed with dominant cultural milieus?
2) How did religious currents in American society during the late 19th and early 20th centuries impact the activities of Muslim thinkers who traveled to the US at the time?
3) How can the interaction between African Americans and Islam from the 1930s to present time be understood through a lens of spiritual transformation and not just as social protest.
